Follow in the footsteps of Michelangelo Merisi, universally known as Caravaggio, on a full day tour throughout Naples. Caravaggio’s escape from Rome, following accusations of murder, brought him to Naples in 1606, where he was protected by the powerful Colonna family. Here he would create some of the most important works of his life.
On this tour we will show you the works that made this artist famous in his “Neapolitan phase”, the places where they are exhibited and the historically documented locations that inspired him. Through legends, anecdotes and walks down narrow alleyways, we will show you Naples through the events that marked the painter’s life and celebrated career, one which is still veiled in mystery.
The tour starts in the historical center, not far from San Gregorio Armeno and Pio Monte della Misericordia—the first European institution to give aid to the needy—for whom Caravaggio painted the famous and dramatic “Seven Works of Mercy”. The coffee break will take place in the “Locanda del Cerriglio”, the tavern where Caravaggio usually dined on the traditional dishes of Neapolitan cuisine.
We will continue with the visit of “Palazzo Zevallos di Stigliano” situated across the road from the picturesque and famous “Spanish Quarters”. This building, an extraordinary example of Art Nouveau architecture, houses Caravaggio’s last painting: “The Martyrdom of Saint Ursula”.
The tour ends with a visit to the Museo di Capodimonte, where we will be able to admire “The Flagellation of Christ”, one of the most important and moving works by the painter.
